In 1963, the year President John F. Kennedy was tragically assassinated in Texas, the United States Treasury Department was attempting to simplify its paper currency by phasing out all but Federal Reserve Notes—including these with bright red seals. The front features the portrait of Thomas Jefferson, and the reverse features a very intricate, eye-appealing depiction of his home, Monticello. This is the first series that the $2 Legal Tender note printed with the “In God We Trust” motto.
